Margin and Tax Calculator
Calculate profit margin, markup and GST/VAT/sales tax for any country with current 2026 rates.
Margin / Markup Calculator
Enter cost and selling price to see profit, margin and markup. Or enter a target margin / markup to find the selling price you need. Margin is profit as a share of the PRICE; markup is profit as a share of the COST — they are not the same number.
Profit per unit
$ 15.00
Classic confusion: 25% markup is NOT 25% margin. Cost 60 + 25% markup = price 75, but margin is only 20%. Margin can never exceed 100%; markup can.
Updated: October 2026. Tax rates change with government budgets. These rates are provided for estimation — verify the current rate with your tax authority before filing or invoicing. If a preset looks wrong for your case, use the custom rate field.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between margin and markup?
Margin is profit as a percentage of the selling price, while markup is profit as a percentage of cost. A 25% markup is not a 25% margin: cost 60 plus 25% markup gives price 75, which is only a 20% margin.
How do I add or remove GST from a price?
To add tax, multiply the net price by one plus the rate. To remove tax, divide the gross price by one plus the rate. Never subtract the percentage directly from the total, which gives the wrong answer.
What changed in India GST 2.0?
From 22 September 2025 India abolished the old 12% and 28% slabs. Current rates are 5% for merit items, 18% standard, 40% for luxury and sin goods, plus 0% and 3% for special categories.
Why is there no single USA sales tax rate?
The USA has no federal VAT. Sales tax is set by more than 12,000 state, county and city jurisdictions, and five states charge no statewide sales tax at all, so the calculator lets you enter your combined local rate.
Why does tax never feed into margin?
Margin measures your business profit on the pre-tax price, because tax collected from customers belongs to the government. Always remove included tax from the price before computing margin.
