Why marketplaces demand clean backgrounds
Scroll any marketplace and the pattern is obvious: listings with clean, distraction-free product shots get the clicks. Amazon goes further and mandates it — the main product image must sit on a pure white background. Daraz and Shopify don't always mandate, but their algorithms and buyers both reward the same look.
For a small seller, this used to mean Photoshop skills or paying per image. An AI background remover collapses that cost to zero — if it doesn't watermark the result or demand a subscription, which is where most 'free' options disqualify themselves.
Phone photos work fine — shoot them right
You don't need a studio. A phone, a window, and a plain backdrop — a white bedsheet, a large sheet of paper — produce source photos the AI handles easily. Shoot in soft, even daylight (harsh sun creates shadows the model reads as part of the product), keep the backdrop a contrasting color to the product, and fill the frame so the product is large in the shot.
The 15 MB upload cap comfortably fits phone photos. What matters more than megapixels is contrast: a dark product on a light backdrop separates cleanly; a white product on a white sheet is the hardest case — switch to a light-grey backdrop for those.
- Shoot in soft, even daylight against a plain contrasting backdrop.
- Fill the frame with the product; avoid tiny subjects in big scenes.
- White products need a grey backdrop, not white — contrast is everything.
Transparent PNG vs white background
The tool outputs a transparent PNG, which is the most flexible master file: marketplaces accept it, and you or your designer can drop it onto any template or colored background. For Amazon's main image specifically, place the transparent cutout on a pure white canvas (255, 255, 255) in any free editor — thirty seconds of work.
Don't overthink it beyond that. Transparent for flexibility and templates; flattened-on-white wherever the marketplace rules demand pure white. Either way, start from the clean cutout.
The per-listing workflow
The workflow per listing is short: shoot the product, upload the best shot, download the transparent PNG, place it on white if the marketplace requires it, upload to your listing. A few minutes per product, most of it shooting.
The honest constraint: one image at a time, no batch mode. For a new seller listing ten products, that's a non-issue. For a hundred-SKU catalog refresh, budget the time or pay for batch processing — free and single-image is the tradeoff, stated plainly.
- Shoot → remove background → list. Minutes per product.
- One image at a time — fine for small catalogs, plan ahead for large ones.
